Apple has announced that its forthcoming iOS 11 software update is to include a new "Do Not Disturb While Driving" mode for iPhones.
Provisional figures from the Department for Transport suggest that 1,380 people were killed or seriously injured in collisions where at least one driver was over the limit – an increase of five per cent.
The Government has confirmed anyone caught using a hand-held mobile phone while at the wheel of a car would be fined £200 and receive six points on the licence.
