All-new Kia Sportage

Kia has confirmed its new Kia Sportage compact SUV is set to go on sale during Q1 2016.

The five-door, five-seater compact crossover features a choice of diesel and petrol four-cylinder engines driving either the front or front and rear wheels, via six-speed manual, six-speed automatic or seven-speed double-clutch transmission – depending on model. For the first time, a new ‘GT Line’ specification is available to Sportage customers offering ‘greater visual and dynamic appeal’.

The new Sportage’s front end features the biggest change to the car’s design over the outgoing car, with Kia’s ‘tiger-nose’ grille and the car’s headlamps separated for the new model. The headlamps are now positioned higher, sweeping back along the outer edges of a ‘sharply-detailed bonnet’. A lower, wider grille – enlarged to support greater engine cooling – adds more volume to the lower half of the Sportage’s face. GT Line models develop the exterior look further with ‘ice-cube’ LED fog lamps, inspired by those found on the high-powered cee’d GT, and aluminium-effect skid plates.

At the rear, the new Sportage features more horizontal forms and features lines, with smooth bodywork on the tailgate. Inspired by the 2013 Kia Provo concept, slim combination lamps running along a horizontal parallel are joined together by a strip that runs the width of the rear, while the turn signals and reversing lights are separate, located lower down. The GT Line adds dual exhaust pipes and metal-effect rear underbody diffuser for a sportier appearance.

Available with a choice of 16-, 17- or 19-inch alloy wheel designs, the GT Line specification comes with a unique 19-inch wheel option as standard.

The fourth-generation model carries over many of the engines found in the current vehicle, with most benefitting from a ‘broad range of modifications’ to improve fuel efficiency, NVH and power delivery. A new 1.6-litre T-GDI (turbo gasoline direct injection) is also available for the first time on the Sportage, exclusively for GT Line buyers, offering a combination of 'lively performance and high fuel economy'.

The ‘Gamma’ 1.6-litre T-GDI engine is based on the same unit powering the Kia cee’d GT and pro_cee’d GT, producing 177 ps – and peak 265 Nm torque. The brand’s latest 1.6-litre T-GDI engine, producing 132 ps and 160.8 Nm torque, is carried over directly from the third-generation Sportage.

The new model will continue to offer the 115 ps 1.7-litre CRDi diesel engine, and a ‘significantly’ upgraded 2.0-litre ‘R’ power unit. This 2.0-litre turbodiesel is available with two power outputs – 136 ps with 373 Nm torque, and 185 ps with 400 Nm. Both high- and lower-powered versions of the 2.0-litre ‘R’ diesel are available both on the standard Sportage and with the GT Line specification. An all-new seven-speed double-clutch transmission (DCT) also features, recently launched in the enhanced Kia cee’d and available exclusively on models equipped with the new 177 ps 1.6-litre T-GDI engine. The DCT is capable of handling the higher torque outputs of the turbocharged engine. The range also continues to be offered with a choice of six-speed manual and automatic transmissions.

On the inside, Kia says an all-new interior represents ‘one of the most significant improvements’ over the third-generation Sportage. A wide, driver-oriented dashboard with a simple modern design blends metalwork with soft-touch materials. The fourth-generation model has an increased exterior and interior dimensions - with the most significant change to the Sportage’s dimensions is a 30 mm growth in its wheelbase. Passenger space has increased, with headroom rising for front and rear passengers respectively, while maximum legroom has expanded by 19 mm. Boot space has expanded from 465 litres to 503 litres, made more practical by a dual-height luggage floor, allowing taller items to fit into the boot and still remain hidden by the tonneau cover.

The 2016 Sportage is fitted as standard with a large number of airbags, further improving passive safety for occupants, with airbags for driver and front passenger, first row side airbags, and first and second row curtain airbags. The SUV scored a maximum possible five-star safety rating in the Euro NCAP crash performance tests.

The new model can be specified with up-to-date active hazard-avoidance technologies. Available systems will include: Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) and High Beam Assist (HBA) to name a few. Buyers can choose between 7.0- or 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment and satellite navigation systems, each supporting the addition of DAB digital radio as well as a new wireless charger for mobile devices, the first for any car in the C-SUV segment according to Kia.

Depending on market, other new available features will include: a rear-view parking camera with dynamic parking lines, a Smart Power Tailgate, which opens the tailgate automatically when the key is ‘sensed’ in close proximity to the tailgate; Dynamic Bending Headlamps, which sweep the road ahead in line with the steering wheel for greater visibility and improved safety at night; and a new Smart Welcome function, which turns on interior and door handle lamps and unfolds the door mirrors once the smart key fob is located within 1.3-1.7 metres of the door handle.

The new Kia Sportage will go on sale across Europe in Q1 of 2016 with prices yet to be confirmed.

Vauxhall teases new GT Concept

Vauxhall has revealed a teaser image of its new GT Concept car.

Set to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, the company has released a two short films that reveal a little more of the car’s design. In the video, Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann, CEO of Vauxhall and Opel, opens a door to show the front of the 'purebred' GT Concept, with the words: ‘Don’t miss what happens next.’

Accompanying the film is an image of the GT Concept’s central double exhaust, and while Vauxhall says the car’s design is ‘in no way retro’, this feature was a highlight of concept cars from both Vauxhall and sister brand Opel in the mid-1960s. Vauxhall presented the XVR at the Geneva Show in 1966, and Opel the Experimental GT at Frankfurt the year before. According to Vauxhall, both were ‘ultra-modern, minimalistic and uncompromising, with a sculptural shape – a philosophy which also defines the design of the new GT Concept’.

As for the GT Concept’s red tyre, seen briefly in this latest film, it pays homage in an avant-garde way to the Motoclub 500, a futuristic Opel motorcycle from 1928 wore red rubber.

The Geneva Motor Show runs from 3rd to 13th March 2016.

James Bond’s Aston Martin DB10 up for auction

A unique Aston Martin DB10, made for James Bond in 'Spectre' is to be auctioned for charity.

The Aston Martin DB10 – the first bespoke car created for James Bond by Aston Martin – is to go under the auctioneer’s gavel at Christie’s in London, with proceeds donated to Medecins Sans Frontieres. The only car to date in the rarest DB lineage to be made available for private ownership, the auction offers a very rare opportunity to own a piece of automotive history with bids almost certainly to go over the £1-million mark.

The auction of the only DB10 to date to be made available for private ownership celebrates the release of the 24th Bond film ‘Spectre’ on Digital HD, Blu-ray and DVD with 24 special auction lots going under the hammer for charity, led by the DB10.

Celebrating the British brand’s half century of working with Bond, which started with the DB5, the DB10 gives a glimpse of the future design direction for the next generation of Aston Martins. Production of the DB10 was strictly limited to ten examples of the bespoke sports car which was developed and hand-built by the designers, engineers and ‘artisan craftspeople’ at Aston Martin’s Gaydon headquarters in the UK for the latest Bond film.

The DB10 features a 4.7-litre V8 petrol engine and six-speed manual gearbox, with Aston Martin saying it ‘has an estimated top speed of around 190 mph’. The car features an all carbon fibre exterior, while the interior has been handmade using fine luxury leathers, carbon fibre and aluminium.

Most of the DB10s were modified for use in the filming of Spectre, but the DB10 offered at Christie’s is one of only two “show” cars, which were left unmodified and used for display purposes. This DB10 took pride of place at the world premiere of Spectre at the Royal Albert Hall in London and has been signed by James Bond himself, Daniel Craig.

The auction will take place on 18th February at Christie’s King Street auction house in London.

Vauxhall's new Astra Sports Tourer tested to extremes

Vauxhall's all-new Brit-built Astra Sports Tourer has undergone extreme climate testing to enable it to cope with the coldest of winters or the warmest of summers.

A stock production model was subjected to conditions comparable to the Sahara desert at Vauxhall/Opel's International Technical Development Centre (ITDC) in Russelsheim, Germany. In the middle of winter, the mercury was at 60 degrees Celsius and the sweat was pouring.

One day later, same place, same time: the Astra Sports Tourer was wrapped up in a white outfit covered with a thin layer of ice. The vehicle's interior was not visible from the outside, as the windows were completely frozen over as the temperature dropped to -40 degrees.

"We want to see how the materials in the Sports Tourer react to extreme conditions. We also check if its appearance changes and if extreme heat or cold have an effect on, for example, gap width," explains Otto Hemmelmann, Lead Engineer Test Methods, "After all, our customers around the world drive the Astra in all different climate zones."

The heat and cold test bench, also called thermal cycling testing, is part of the compulsory program in Vauxhall vehicle development, just like the acoustic and electronic lab tests.

During the two-week phase, temperatures changed daily. "Sealing, bonding, plastic parts and materials, rubber, all this has to work properly, meaning constant elastic constricting and stretching like a rubber band, without bearing any traces of it," explains the Chief Engineer.

Even direct sunlight can be simulated in the climatic chamber. "If the Sports Tourer is parked outside in the summer, interior temperatures can reach 90 degrees," says Hemmelmann. With the help of the sun simulation, the team tests the interior materials' stress tolerance. "But we also test how long the air conditioner has to be on until the temperature is bearable again." In addition, the so-called four-post test bench moves the Sports Tourer up and down under its wheels to test whether comfort in the car is compromised under extreme conditions and to ensure the interior materials don't squeak or rattle during driving despite high strain and stress.

After the hot/cold treatment, Vauxhall engineers look at the Sports Tourer through the customer's eyes and analyse any differences. "We look at what impression the car makes on us and take measurements to determine if anything has become distorted or misaligned," says Hemmelmann.

Only once all components, body and add-on parts are tested and cleared is the Astra Sports Tourer deemed to be fit for purpose and ready for sale.

Revamped DS 3 revealed

Facelifted versions of both the hatchback and Cabrio versions of the DS 3 have been unveiled.

The revamp includes a revised front end featuring the "DS Wings" that are sculpted around a vertically-oriented grille bearing the DS emblem. Surrounded in chrome, the grille extends towards the LED headlamps and fog lamps via two chromed-finished wings.

The new car offers more personalisation options for the roof, body, rear view mirror housings, dashboard and gear knob. Customers can now choose from 78 body/roof colour combinations and four fabric roofs for the DS 3 Cabrio.

The new DS 3 will be available in the UK with seven engines, including three PureTech three-cylinder petrol units. There are also two THP four-cylinder petrol engines and two BlueHDi diesels. There are two types of gearbox - manual and a latest-generation automatic. The result is CO2 emissions from 87g/km (for the BlueHDi 100) and no more than 129g/km for the range as a whole.

The range will also include Performance versions with revised styling and power from the top of the range 208hp 1.6 THP S&S engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox with shorter gear ratios. Despite 300Nm of torque, CO2 emissions are a modest 125g/km.

Chassis highlights include a Torsen limited slip differential (to improve traction, road-holding and handling), suspension which has been lowered by 15mm and the front and rear tracks that have been widened by 26mm and 14mm, respectively.

The Performance models are also fitted with larger 323mm brake discs at the front with special Brembo calipers, and 249mm discs at the rear.

On the styling front, highlights include a special twin tailpipe, carbon side mouldings, a new sill plate design and Matt Black wheel arch extensions, while on the inside, there are leather and Alcantara upholstered bucket seats, with special DS Performance embroidery.

New DS 3 models are equipped with Mirror Screen functionality, comprising Apple CarPlay or MirrorLink (for Android phones), bringing drivers a smarter, safer and more enjoyable way of experiencing all the personalised features of their smartphones.

Drivers can also download "MyDS", a free app (available for Android and iOS) informing them of their servicing schedule, fuel economy and parking location.
Active City Brake helps to prevent minor collisions at low speeds and the DS 3 is now also equipped with front and rear parking sensors, as well as a reversing camera with visual indicator guide lines on the 7-inch screen.
Britain is the leading market for DS 3 sales. More were registered in the UK last year than in France or any other global market.

Since launching in 2010, 390,000 have been sold in total.

Ford Focus RS production underway

The first all-new Focus RS has rolled off the production line in Saarlouis, Germany, signaling an increasing demand for performance cars across Europe, says Ford.

The carmaker expects to produce 41,000 performance cars for Europe in 2016, up from 29,000 in 2015, representing an increase of 40 per cent.

The all-new Focus RS is among the models driving demand, along with the Mustang, for which Ford has taken more than 13,000 orders in Europe (2,650 in the UK), and the hot hatch ST versions of the Focus and Fiesta.

The Focus RS is one of 12 new performance vehicles Ford will bring to customers globally through 2020. Developed by a team of engineers in Europe and the US, it's powered by a special version of Ford's new 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine delivering maximum power of 350PS. This will enable the high-performance hatchback to get from 062 mph in 4.7sec, making it the fastest accelerating Ford RS model ever.

Since prices were announced in September, customers have placed more than 3,100 orders (2,300 of these in Britain).

"This will be a truly remarkable year for Ford performance cars, with unprecedented performance capability, as well as sophisticated powertrain and chassis technologies including the new Ford Performance All Wheel Drive system for Focus RS," said Joe Bakaj, vice president, Product Development, Ford of Europe.

'Eco' model joins Fiat 500 range

Fiat is now offering the most popular engine in the 500 range with an enhanced 'Eco' specification.

The 1.2-litre 69hp 'Eco' is equipped with additional efficiency technologies including a smart alternator, improved underbody aerodynamics and low rolling resistance 15-inch tyres, as well as Start & Stop which is already standard across the 500 range.

Despite no drop in performance, says Fiat, compared to the standard 69hp 1.2 (0-62mph in 12.9 seconds and top speed of 99 mph), these modifications result in the official CO2 emissions for the 1.2 'Eco' being reduced from 110 to 99g/km which, in turn, cuts the annual road tax bill from £20 to £0 and reduces company car BIK tax liability from 17% to 14%.

Official fuel economy also improves with 58.9 mpg (urban cycle), 70.6 mpg (extra urban cycle) and 65.7 mpg (combined cycle) compared to the standard car's 51.4-, 65.7- and 60.1 mpg respectively.

Available in Pop Star and Lounge trim levels, prices for the Fiat 500 1.2 'Eco' start at £11,865 OTR for the hatchback and £14,515 OTR for the convertible 500C version.

One-off Infiniti Q30 sculpture at London Art Fair

Infiniti has unveiled a Q30 with a difference the opening of the 2016 London Art Fair at the Islington Business Centre.

Located just outside the show's entrance is a special Q30, to which 48,000 copper tacks have been painstakingly adhered, covering half of the hatchback's entire bodywork.

Created with the help of contemporary artist Rachel Ducker, the sculpture is made more dynamic with the addition of one of the human like steel wire figures for which she is renowned, leaning out of the side window. The female figure is topped with long two-tone coloured hair, which is flowing outwards as if it were blowing in the wind.

From one side the Q30 appears untouched while the other side is completely covered in the copper tacks. From a distance the car seems to be covered in a layer of long copper coloured hair but to the touch the sharp heads of the tacks can be felt, just like a bed of nails.

These tacks were specifically chosen due to the ability of the copper colour to radiate a variety of different shades depending on the light conditions and angle of viewing; similar to the Liquid Copper Q30 launch colour.

Each tack took approximately 10 seconds to adhere to the body of the Q30, which means that that aspect of the sculpture took around 8000 minutes (or 133 hours) to create.

Rachel Ducker, a self-confessed car nut, spends most of her time living either in Oxford or Marrakech these days, but made a special appearance at the show to not only reveal the Q30 but to also meet with the Infiniti Car designer Simon Cox to discuss the thinking behind the project.

Rachel stated: "My work is all about energy and movement and to put my figures alongside such a well-designed car as the Q30, gave me the opportunity to combine both of my passions. Art is all about what people see as they look at the display, whatever it may be. I do not believe in giving a descriptive list of what it is supposed to mean or what it means to me. Everyone sees things differently depending on the mood of the individual or how the light portrays the image at that particular time."

Simon Cox, Infiniti design director based in Paddington London, had a similar background to Rachel, studying sculpture and jewellery design, before moving onto cars. Simon was both excited and intrigued to see how the car looked. "It is amazing to see how the copper tacks provide a dramatic effect to how the light reflects across the bonnet and down the shoulder lines. It creates a striking flow as you move around the car. I really like Rachel's work and how she portrays movement to bring her models to life."

The one-off Q30 sculpture will be on display outside the entrance to the 2016 London Art Fair in Islington until Sunday 24 January.

Peugeot wins 2016 Dakar Rally

Peugeot has won the 2016 Dakar Rally.

The Peugeot 2008 DKRs claimed nine stage wins out of a possible 12, including seven one-twos and two one-two-threes.

This French marque triumphed at only its second participation in South America with a total of three Peugeot 2008 DKRs reaching the finish ramp. The duo of Stephane Peterhansel and Jean-Paul Cottret in the number 302 Peugeot 2008 DKR called upon all of their experience to seal another win at the finish ramp in Rosario. This is not only their sixth win together, but the 12th win in total for Peterhansel – a six-time Dakar motorbike winner – 25 years after his debut triumph.

With a 9500-kilometre route in two weeks through Argentina and Bolivia, taking in extremes of weather and altitudes that peaked at 4800 metres, Team Peugeot Total took on a challenge with a rather accomplished line-up. The crews of Stephane Peterhansel/Jean-Paul Cottret, Carlos Sainz/Lucas Cruz and Cyril Despres/David Castera have 17 Dakar victories between them and were joined by nine-time world rally champions Sebastien Loeb and Daniel Elena, making their debut on the event.

Peugeot says its engineers learned several valuable lessons during their first participation in South America last year, and worked non-stop ever since to improve the car. Lower, wider, longer and more powerful, the new 2008 DKR kept faith with its two-wheel drive configuration against the traditional 4x4s.

During the first week Peugeot occupied the top three places, thanks to six one-twos and two one-two-threes on the six stages run. The second week of the rally offered a more varied route, taking in an increased amount of off-piste action and an itinerary through the dunes. Through this hazard-strewn terrain, both Sebastien Loeb and Carlos Sainz bid farewell to their hopes of victory, because of a roll and a mechanical breakage on stage 10 respectively. Cyril Despres had already been delayed on stage five with a turbo problem, so it was Stephane Peterhansel who emerged as Team Peugeot Total’s main contender for victory.

The Frenchman won a crucial stage through the famous Fiambala dunes, and then seized the advantage on the 10th of 13 stages, with a cushion of one hour at the head of the field. He then just had to manage that advantage all the way to the finish.

Stephane Peterhansel (driver of the winning Peugeot 2008 DKR) said: “This is a huge satisfaction for us. Before the start, a result like this was far from guaranteed. My feeling was that the team was still a bit young, but in fact everything came together extremely well. We had the nice surprise of seeing that our car was extremely competitive throughout the WRC-style stages. I just tried to stay in touch during those days, knowing that Carlos and Seb were quicker than me. We drove a clean rally with one day of maximum attack, and then we found ourselves in the lead with a very comfortable margin: 50 minutes with just three days to go. After that, it was just a question of looking after that gap as intelligently as possible. When I was competing on my very first Dakars as a bike rider, I dreamed of one day driving for Peugeot. To have joined the team and won with them is a massive source of satisfaction for me. “

Jean-Paul Cottret (co-driver of the winning Peugeot 2008 DKR) added: “We’re delighted to have brought this Peugeot 2008 DKR to the top step of the podium. It’s a great reward for the whole team, which has worked so hard for two years. After a year of learning, we’ve now achieved victory. It’s a great result, so a massive thanks to everyone.”

New VLF Force 1 Super Car revealed in Detroit

VLF Automotive has pulled the covers off its new all carbon fibre-bodied sports car, the Force 1.

The American made two-seater is described as a high-performance, low-production sports car, manufactured in Auburn Hills, Michigan by the newly launched VLF Automotive - of which former Aston Martin designer Henrik Fisker is a partner and design chief.

VLF, established in 2015, is named after the founding members - former General Motors Vice Chairman Bob Lutz, manufacturer Gilbert Villarreal and entrepreneur and designer Henrik Fisker. The company has announced the production of 2 models in 2016 - the Destino V8 and Force 1 V10.

The exterior design of the Force 1 has 'classic American sports car proportions' with a long bonnet, short front overhang, long tail and pushed out wheels. “In the case of Force 1, there is an extremely pushed back green house,” Fisker explained. “The sculpture on Force 1 is like a family succession to the Destino, dramatic and powerful, relative flat surfaces on the high end of the body side, with lines full of tension, emerging onto a rounder lower section, where Force 1 has a large functional outlet." The car has one of the most powerful naturally aspirated road engines in the world, according to VLF, delivering ‘the best performance in its price class’. The 745hp, 8.4-litre V10 engine enables a 0-60mph time of 3.0 seconds flat.

The Force 1 incorporates downforce elements such as the deep front spoiler and aggressive rear diffuser in pure visible carbon fibre. At the top of the rear glass sits a unique rear wing spoiler also housing the in car Wi-Fi and third brake light. Both the front and rear signature Henrik Fisker wheels feature a concave section design to improve strength of the wheel and requiring less mass. The 21-inch wheels with wide high-performance Pirelli tires sits in ‘lean, sculptured, pronounced wheel arches’. The front features an aggressive grille housing the VLF logo in the centre and two ultra-slim lights sitting above the grille. The interior is described as luxurious, with hand stitched ultra-soft leather, Alcantara, suede with several other unique features, such as a champagne holder.

Production commences at the end of April 2016 in Auburn Hills and first customer deliveries begin in the third quarter of 2016, with the base price starting at $268,500 (£187,992). The Force 1 V10 will be produced in limited numbers with an initial production of only 50 units.

VLF is expected to have seven dedicated dealers with full service capability, throughout North America, and several international dealers appointed in 2016.

Renault investigated in ongoing emissions scandal

Police have raided Renault factories in relation to the recent Volkswagen emissions scandal.

Investigators went to Renault Headquaters, the Renault Technical Centre in Lardy and the Technocentre in Guyancourt. The news wiped 20 per cent of the French car makers share price, although Renault were quick to say tests had found no evidence of emissions-cheating devices.

French ministers said that no “defeat device” or fraudulent software in Renault engines has been found. Renault released a statement saying: “Following public disclosure by the EPA – US Environmental Protection Agency – of the existence of a Defeat Device software used by a leading car manufacturer, an independent technical commission was created by the French Government.”

Renault go on to explain that the purpose of this independent technical commission was to verify that French car manufacturers have not installed equivalent devices in their vehicles. In this regard, the UTAC (French Homologation Authority mandated by the Ministry) is currently testing 100 vehicles in circulation, including 25 Renault vehicles reflecting Renault's market share in France.

In December 2015, 11 vehicles had already been tested, including 4 Renault vehicles enabling the French public authorities to initiate productive discussions with Renault's engineering team. Renault says the French Agency for Energy and Climate (DGEC) ‘already considers that the on-going procedure would not reveal the presence of a defeat device on Renault's vehicles’ which it explains ‘is good news for Renault.’

Renault says its teams are 'fully cooperating' with the independent technical commission and the additional investigations decided by the Ministry of Economy.

Kia reveals Telluride in Detroit

Kia has pulled the covers off its new Telluride SUV.

Revealed at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) the concept is a three-row, seven-passenger, luxury hybrid SUV featuring an upright shape, muscular stance, and state-of-the-art technology to care for its occupants. Based on an existing platform, the concept shows the brand’s interest in ‘potentially offering a premium SUV positioned above the current Sorento’.

The Telluride’s front doors and rear-hinged back doors swing open 90 degrees in opposing directions revealing four black-leather ‘captain’s seats’ that appear to float within the spacious cabin, in front of a folded third-row bench. The large cabin allows the middle seats to recline nearly flat and include large fold-away footrests for added comfort.

All four seats include a series of diamond-cut openings in the seatback, each embedded with Smart Sensors to capture a passenger’s vital health information. Once obtained, these vitals are displayed on the interior door panel screens, which then systematically synchronise with a Light Emitted Rejuvenation (LER) system. The LER system utilises a massive, wing-shaped LED panel mounted beneath the oversized sunroof that displays a pattern of therapeutic light to treat desynchronosis (jetlag) and improve the passengers’ energy levels.

Another new technology introduced in concept is Swipe Command – a thin, touch-sensitive, interactive band mounted to the second row centre console – which allows rear-seat passengers to quickly scroll and select desired media by simply swiping their hand. The selected media is then played either through the seven-speaker premium Harman Kardon audio system, or via a set of portable Harman Kardon headphones that wirelessly charge when stowed in the console. Up front, a compartment in the centre stack allows for wireless mobile phone charging, and Kia’s first use of 3D-printed components add a distinct, modern design element to the dashboard, door panels, and steering wheel.

The Telluride’s ‘modern and muscular’ appearance is accentuated by flared wheel arches stretching around huge 22-inch five-spoke wheels. A front fascia incorporates a much larger version of Kia’s tiger nose grille, as well as quad-LED headlamps, pronounced horizontal LED indicator lights, and a polished-metal skid plate below the bumper.

The concept is powered by an ‘extremely efficient’ PHEV powertrain, activated by a finger-print push-button start. Utilising a 3.5-litre petrol direct injected (GDI) V6 engine and powerful electric motor, the SUV’s transverse-mounted powertrain combines to produce 400 horsepower (270 horsepower from V6 and 130 horsepower from the electric motor) while achieving more than 30mpg on the motorway. Power is sent to all four wheels via an advanced all-wheel drive system.

While there are currently no plans to bring the Telluride to production, Kia says it has a history of delivering production vehicles that bear strong resemblance to a preceding concept.

New Genesis Brand Launches Flagship G90

The first model from Hyundai’s new luxury brand - the Genesis G90 - has been unveiled in Detroit.

The new model is the flagship of the brand’s line-up and will compete at the top of the premium luxury car segment. It features ‘world-class technological innovations and the highest levels of refinement, convenience and dynamic performance’ according to Hyundai.

Created by the new Prestige Design Division, the G90 represents the brand’s ‘Athletic Elegance’ design theme. The silhouette is described as both powerful and refined, with its prominent bonnet, generous wheelbase and minimised overhangs. Inside the cabin, fine materials and textures from top automotive suppliers meet human-centered ergonomics to provide occupants with ‘absolute convenience and luxurious comfort’. At the front a ‘CREST’ grille features the winged Genesis emblem. Available with full-LED signature headlights (V8 model) they flow from fascia to wing – a key design element of the new Genesis brand. On the lower fascia, standard LED Daytime Running Lights add to the distinctive illumination signature.

The new saloon features GENESIS SMART SENSE, a suite of active driver safety technologies. These cover the full spectrum of safety says Hyundai, from driver alertness and focus to total occupant safety, and even the safety of other drivers around you. This suite brings together systems such as Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Smart Cruise Control, Smart Blind Spot Detection and Lane Keep Assist.

The G90’s Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) uses sensor fusion technology to help avoid a potential collision or reduce its impact. With this system, the car will employ automatic braking when it detects another vehicle or pedestrian at an unsafe closing rate of speed. This system uses the front radar from the Smart Cruise Control system and the forward camera from the Lane Keep Assist (LKA) to provide this extra margin of safety.

Hyundai says G90 owners will ‘immediately notice’ the highest standards of refined performance and describes these characteristics as central to the Genesis brand, adding that ‘even with this sporty and responsive character, the G90 interior environment remains well-mannered’. Power comes from either an all-new 3.3-litre direct-injected, twin-turbocharged V6 or the Tau 5.0-litre direct-injected V8 for ultimate power.

The Genesis brand was created for a new generation of discerning consumers, which will see six new Genesis models launched by 2020.
